Avoid These 7 Common Mistakes When Installing Cabinets

Installing kitchen cabinets isn’t rocket science — but skipping a few steps or rushing the process can lead to costly issues. Whether you’re DIY’ing or working with a contractor, avoid these 7 mistakes for a smoother project.

❌ 1. Not Measuring Correctly

The #1 cabinet mistake? Bad measurements. Even being off by ¼" can ruin your layout.

Avoid it by:

  • Double-checking wall lengths

  • Measuring appliances, doors, and windows

  • Using our cabinet measurement form for clean, complete measurements

❌ 2. Installing Base Cabinets Before Wall Cabinets

You’ll end up working over the base cabinets — and risk damaging them.

Fix:

  • Always install uppers first, then do the base cabinets

❌ 3. Not Checking for Level Walls and Floors

Crooked walls or uneven floors? Cabinets won’t sit flush or straight unless you shim and adjust.

Fix:

  • Use a level on every cabinet

  • Shim the back, bottom, or side as needed

❌ 4. Using Drywall Anchors Instead of Studs

This can lead to cabinets pulling away from the wall — especially uppers.

Fix:

  • Use a stud finder and screw into studs only

  • Never mount cabinets into drywall alone

❌ 5. Skipping Filler Strips

Leaving zero clearance between cabinets and walls/appliances means doors and drawers might not open fully.

Fix:

  • Add filler strips to give space and clean visual gaps

  • Use 3", 6", or 9" strips where needed

❌ 6. Forgetting to Scribe or Trim Panels

Walls and floors aren’t perfectly square — and you’ll see it if your end panels don’t fit tight.

Fix:

  • Scribe side panels to match wall contours

  • Use toe kicks and trim to hide gaps cleanly

❌ 7. Rushing the Install

The fastest way to a sloppy kitchen is rushing.

Fix:

  • Take your time

  • Check level after every cabinet

  • Call us if you're unsure — we’re here to help
