Installing Upper Cabinets: Best Practices and Tools You’ll Need

Upper cabinets can make or break the look of your kitchen — and proper installation is key. Whether you're a contractor or a confident DIYer, here’s how to install wall cabinets the right way.

🧰 What You’ll Need

  • Stud finder

  • Level

  • Tape measure

  • Drill + screws

  • Shims

  • Ledger board or cabinet jack

  • Pencil or painter’s tape

  • Clamps (optional but helpful)

✅ Affordable Cabinets come pre-assembled with soft-close hardware already installed — no assembly needed.

📐 Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Upper Cabinets

1️⃣ Step 1: Mark the Layout

  • Use painter’s tape or pencil to mark where each cabinet goes

  • Mark bottom line of the uppers — usually 54” from the floor (standard with 18” of countertop clearance)

  • Mark stud locations to anchor the cabinets

2️⃣ Step 2: Add a Ledger Board (Optional but Smart)

  • Temporarily screw a straight 1x4 ledger board along the bottom line to support cabinets while mounting

  • Makes solo installs way easier and ensures cabinets stay level

3️⃣ Step 3: Start in the Corner

  • Always install corner or end cabinets first

  • Drill pilot holes through the cabinet back into studs

  • Use cabinet screws (2½” recommended)

  • Check for level side-to-side and front-to-back — use shims if needed

4️⃣ Step 4: Connect Cabinets Together

  • Once the first cabinet is in, clamp the next one beside it

  • Pre-drill and screw the frames together

  • Anchor into studs as you go

  • Adjust as needed to stay level and flush

5️⃣ Step 5: Finish and Fill Gaps

  • Install any filler strips or panels as needed

  • Use trim or scribe molding for gaps against uneven walls or ceilings

⚠️ Pro Tips

  • Always use two people (or a jack) to lift and position cabinets

  • Don’t rely on drywall anchors — anchor into studs

  • Use shims behind the cabinet if the wall bows inward

  • Install wall cabinets before base cabinets to avoid working over them

💡 Our Recommendation
